Update: Song Covers Can be Good

One of my favorite things in life is the sharing of music. I am not afraid to share my favorite songs that most people haven’t heard of, because I expect the person to reciprocate with a well thought out playlist of their own. Even my friend Jake who is deaf has shared a few of her favorite songs and has asked for my favorite songs for her to play. Like my friend Javoun said, "Music is the gateway to happiness".
What I have been getting into recently is covers of songs. Not like the YouTube version of at-home recording with an acoustic guitar watching somebody belt out C sharp like it’s a God-given gift. Seriously though, are you supposed to watch their whole living room performance, or do people really listen to that on the daily? The covers I listen to aren’t even titled covers anymore because the song is altered too much to be considered exact.
Take the popular song My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ. It became a popular hit due to the running man challenge, and was played on radio stations all over the nation. I personally love the song; however, it is sometimes a little to “pop” for me. Then, whilst browsing through Spotify’s immense song choices, I found the perfect version of the song for a chill night in (my boo by kerri).
These versions of the songs producers come up with take a song people around the world know too well and warp it until it’s new and exciting again. It’s great, because when you play it around people, they know these songs word for word, but they’re still experiencing the song in a completely new light. New voice, new beat, new mood.
Some of these versions are made only days after the original came out. You can check out a playlist I made on Soundcloud full of covers of songs we all know and loved, each with a twist on it making it something special. It’s the music you will want to vibe with when you’re trying to lounge and shock people that popular songs can exist in a world that isn’t catered to the radio.
If you have any songs that would make a great addition, please leave it in the comment section below, and I'll add it to the playlist!
